3. Plan the route before you plan the delivery date

4. Allow time for permits and escorts

Oversized and overweight shipments typically require permits for each state or jurisdiction along the route. Permit requirements can specify the approved route, travel hours, axle configuration, maximum dimensions, holiday restrictions, and escort requirements.

For especially complex machinery, determine whether booms, masts, guards, arms, or other attachments should be removed before transport. Disassembly may reduce height or width, improve stability, and make permitting easier.

6. Build a realistic schedule

Heavy haul transportation does not follow the same scheduling model as standard freight. Permits, escorts, daylight restrictions, road conditions, weather, and construction activity can all influence transit time.

Manufacturers should:

  1. Contact a heavy haul provider as soon as the equipment’s basic specifications are known.
  2. Provide a ship-by window instead of relying on a single inflexible date.
  3. Allow time for engineering review, route surveys, and permits.
